The River Suir Interactive Mapping Project has been undertaken as an action of the South Tipperary heritage Plan and has been funded by South Tipperary County Council and The Heritage Council.
The project is the follow up phase to the River Suir Heritage Survey undertaken in 2009/2010 which highlighted the built, cultural and natural heritage features along its route.
The survey was undertaken by South Tipperary County Council’s Heritage Office partly funded by the Heritage Council. It covered 33km of the river and its banks from Tinhalla Bridge, downstream of Carrick-on-Suir and extended up river to Knocklofty Bridge, up stream of Clonmel.
The River Suir Built Heritage Survey was undertaken by Fred Hamond and the River Suir Natural Heritage by Dr. Helen Shanahan, Dr. John Feehan and Bláthnaid Keogh from UCD.
The survey highlighted the extent to which the Suir has influenced patterns of settlement, transport routes (both along and across the river), agriculture and industry and provided the resources for settlement, for example water, sand, fish etc.
The survey illustrated the connection between the historic influence of the river and the heritage of the area. This next step is to make the information available to those who live here and to visitors through this interactive Flash-based application.
