With Summer now in full swing, we would like to remind all dog owners of their responsibilities when it comes to cleaning up after their pets. Dog fouling continues to be a serious problem on our foot paths, parks and open spaces. Not only is it very disrespectful to others sharing these spaces, dog excrement can cause an infection known as toxocariasis which can lead to dizziness, nausea, asthma and even blindness or seizures.
Dog fouling is particularly unpleasant for people with prams and buggies or for wheelchair users, as it is easily transferred from wheel to hand. Young children and the visually impaired can also be very negatively affected by dog fouling.
We would like to thank all responsible dog owners for cleaning up after their pooch, but to the small proportion who do not, you face an on the spot fine of €150 or if convicted a maximum court fine of €3000 under the Litter Pollution Acts.
To assist dog owners, Tipperary County Council provides mutt mitt bags free of charge at 71 locations throughout the county, details can be found on the Tipperary County Council website. Please use these bags and dispose of them responsibly in the nearest bin, or bring them home.
Don’t spoil these shared spaces for others, “do your bit and use the mitt”. Let’s all do our bit to curb this problem and make our county a better place to live, work and recreate.
